Frequently asked questions
-
How does the debt review process work? The debt review process begins with a financial assessment to determine if you are over-indebted. If confirmed, a debt counsellor will negotiate with your creditors to reduce your monthly instalments and, where possible, lower interest rates to make repayments more affordable. Your debts are then restructured, and a new payment plan is created. This plan is submitted to the court for approval, ensuring legal protection from creditors. Throughout the process, payments are managed through a Payment Distribution Agency (PDA), and your debt counsellor monitors the progress until your debt is fully repaid.
-
Will my credit score be affected by debt counselling?Yes, entering debt counselling will affect your credit score. During the process, a flag is placed on your credit record to indicate that you are under debt review. This means you will not be able to access further credit while undergoing the process. However, once all your debts are settled, the flag is removed, and your credit score can begin to improve over time as you maintain good financial habits.
-
How much does debt counselling cost? The cost of debt counselling is regulated by the National Credit Regulator (NCR). It typically includes an application fee, a restructuring fee (either a percentage of your debt or a capped amount), and ongoing monthly after-care fees (a percentage of your monthly repayment, usually capped). The total cost will depend on your specific financial situation, and a debt counsellor will provide a detailed breakdown of fees before starting the process.
-
Will my assets be protected during the debt review?Yes, once you are under debt review, your assets, such as your home and car, are protected from repossession as long as you adhere to the agreed-upon payment plan. Debt review provides legal protection from creditors, preventing them from taking legal action or repossessing your assets while you are complying with the repayment plan approved by the court.
-
Are you registered and compliant with South African laws?Yes, we are registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and fully compliant with South African laws governing debt review and counselling. We adhere to the requirements of the National Credit Act (NCA), ensuring that our services are transparent, ethical, and aligned with all legal standards.
-
How quickly can I expect to see results from debt counselling? The timeline for seeing results from debt counselling depends on the amount of debt and your repayment plan. Typically, clients experience financial relief within the first few months as their monthly repayments are reduced. While the full process of repaying your debt can take several years, the immediate benefits include a structured repayment plan and legal protection from creditors.
